Although it carries no real weight, progress is being made. The Political Action Club thanks Ben’s commitment to serving student interests.

JAN 14th Update

2009 January 14

ITEM 1:

Friday, January 16th – Baruch Vertical Campus Cafeteria, 1:00pm – PAC Fall Agenda

Join the PAC Officers/Executive Board in setting the agenda for the Fall semester. We have many programs, but we only have 3 months. Help us decide which are the best programs to pursue and also add any ideas you may have.

ITEM 2:

Tuesday, January 20th – Baruch Vertical Campus Multipurpose Room (1-107)Obama Inauguration

The School of Public Affairs is inviting all Baruch students to watch Obama take the oath of office at Baruch College. The School of Public Affairs also hosted the Presidential Debates last year. I found them to be more exciting watching them at school with people who share your interest, rather than watching it at alone at home. More information can be found here. To RSVP, click here.

ITEM 3:

Friday, February 6th to Saturday, February 7th – Baruch College – Campus Camp Wellstone

The USG is bringing to Baruch a program called Campus Camp Wellstone. It is totally free, including food, but registration is on a first-come-first-serve basis. The information can be found on your Blackboard page, but I will repost it here:

“The camp is focused on teaching skills needed for community organizing and political activism. It’s a series of workshops in both large and small groups led by trainers from Wellstone Action and there is also case study. Participants get meals on both days covered by USG, a free tee shirt, and a free book from Wellstone Action. We can only take about 75 students, so we are doing it roughly first come first serve. To register, students need to be undergraduates registered for the spring semester, and either find someone who is signing people up in person, or send an email to CampWellstone@usgbaruch.org with their name, phone number, most frequently checked email address, and year.”

05 DEC Update

2008 December 6
by Sal

1. Ron Aaron never got back to us about a student bill of rights. This is, for practical reasons, a dead end. We may pursue alternative paths in the future, but not until the Spring semester.

2. Ben Guttmann, the VP of Legislative Affair at the USG whom we met with and discussed our proposal to cancel classes on election day has gotten back to us. For every Ron Aaron, there’s always a genuine guy like Ben.

Anyway, this is what he wrote: (1) the academic calendar is a CUNY-wide thing; (2) he’s going to speak to both people at other CUNY colleges and people at CUNY central to determine the appropriate path of action; (3) he going to stay in touch.

3. “CUNY Contingents Unite!” says NO to a tuition hike, NO to budget cuts, and NO to layoffs.

<< Gov. Paterson’s $51 million in budget cuts to CUNY are already causing class cancellations and layoffs of adjuncts and other staff. The threat of a $600 tuition hike still looms. So does a hike in subway/bus fares. CUNY’s Board of Trustees has sought a green light to raise tuition at will, while Chancellor Goldstein said the cuts could be “absorbed.” Paterson’s drive for even bigger budget cuts to CUNY, and to programs needed by the most vulnerable sectors of society, has only been delayed — now is the time to stop all the cuts, hikes and layoffs. Opponents of the tuition hike, cuts and layoffs will speak out [in front of the] CUNY Board of Trustees [meeting, where it is supposed to vote on the budget]… >>

There are 2 events. The first is a PROTEST on MONDAY, DECEMBER 08th at 4pm, in front of the Board of Trustees meeting at BARUCH COLLEGE, 24th STREET ENTRANCE.

The other is on the day Gov. Paterson is scheduled to announce his new executive budget. It is a mass rally on Tuesday, December 16th at 4:30; it’s in front of the governor’s NYC offices: 633 3rd Ave at 41st Street. We can’t go to this one because it’s the last day of class and many professors give their final exams that day.

I sent an email to the organization for more info, but you can take a quick look at cunycontingents.wordpress.com

Send me an email if you are willing to join in the 08 DEC event in front of Baruch. It’s absolutely imperative that I know who is coming. We can meet and make posters, signs, and whatnot.

4. The will be a “mandatory” Club Social on Tuesday, DECEMBER 09th, 12:30 – 2:30pm. It will be in the multipurpose room VC 1-107. We will get a chance to speak about our club and food & refreshments will be served.
